Key findings

A significant finding is that media outputs focusing on Islam and Christianity (compared to other religions) predominantly address the political aspects of religious life. For keywords related to Islam, the information during the monitoring period mainly concerned the activities of the Islamic State organization and its human rights violations. There is a notable difference in how the three most represented religions in the dataset are portrayed as victims or violators of rights. The intensity of such portrayals is directly linked to domestic or international events. Islam is predominantly depicted in the political context and as a violator of rights, especially through reports on terrorist attacks. Depictions of Muslims as victims of rights violations are rare and mostly appear in the context of attacks on Muslim groups abroad.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

The center, by its mandate, regularly monitors human rights topics in public discourse, for example through analyses of public perception of human rights or media portrayals of specific human rights issues. The aim of the research report was to analyze the ways and context of portraying religious groups in the Slovak media environment. For the purposes of the analysis, media outputs containing some of the keywords defined according to the most represented religions in the Slovak Republic were searched among online news articles. Data collection was carried out through the Mediaboard application in the first half of 2024, i.e., from January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. It monitored the 20 most visited online news portals. The total number of identified media contributions was 9,864.
